If you want general background information about clinical psychology and neuropsychology, read on. (The first paragraph is about clinical psychology, and the second is a brief introduction to neuropsychology.)
Psychology is the study of human experience. Clinical psychology applies the science of psychology to improving lives through assessing and treating emotional distress or other problems affecting relationships, work, or school. Treatment is usually psychotherapy, otherwise known as counseling or "talk therapy."
Neuropsychology specializes in the evaluation and treatment of neurological conditions such as brain injury, stroke, or dementia by looking at the brain's functioning. By measuring various abilities, we learn about your brain's strengths and weaknesses compared to other people your age. This lets us measure the effects of damage to the brain in conditions already diagnosed (e.g., brain injury, stroke, etc.) or suspected (e.g., concussion that wasn't initially diagnosed). If you are experiencing changes in daily functioning but don't know why, a neuropsychological evaluation can determine whether your symptoms are probably normal for your age or look like a disease - perhaps a dementia - is developing. Based on your results, we can make recommendations to help your functioning in your daily life.
